what's hilarious is that Thomas Lockley's Yasuke book is like the modern version of this, and if it was pre-internet he'd have gotten away with it for at least a decade or more. the only reason he got away with it for a few years was due to the language barrier

>1976 - book comes out that's supposedly based on a real family history, becomes a bestseller. Second addition adds an afterward saying that nearly all the depicted events are dramatizations but the characters, family tree and timeline is real
>1977 - miniseries airs and is a huge success
>1977 - an English journalist discovers that the Gambian historian the author used to validate the Africa parts was was a fraud who wasn't credentialed and likely made up details key to the entire story. Author initially concedes that it may be inaccurate but later doubles down
