Stan Lee emphasised that Marvel was the world outside your window and fans praised "realistic" storylines. Peter Parker facing troubles or being misunderstood by JJJ. Even early FF had a story where Reed lost their money investing. Teams had PR issues and stuff. The politics thing has always been in there. Bill Mantlo Hulk had Hulk shouting at an Israeli superhero and she cries while holding a Palestinian.

Writers wanted to elevate their comics by inserting [issue of the day] in there. Sometimes clumsily. AIDS was a big issue.

I'm old enough to have been in message boards in the 90s and nothing has fucking changed. People were moaning about PC culture then. Most of the debate has changed the same. Fuck I was reading some old comics and in the letter pages you had the same debates/arguments (pic related).

I think people think it is a question of quality but for me it is more: culture in the past was this movie vs that movie. Culture now is: movie vs streaming vs podcast vs doomscrolling social media vs video game. We are pulled in so many directions and choice paralysis is rife. But then the opposite of choice paralysis is how everything feels samey because it is geared towards metrics and pleases no one. So some people jump into loving their comfort classics and other people jump into anger and vitriol.

I don't think culture in the past was necessarily better, just the bad stuff is forgotten over the good stuff and there was less stuff around so building some loose consensus over culture was easier. Now we have people with niche views and poor creative skills trying to make mass appeal culture in franchises or studios and completely failing leading to the same double down effect.

It was forced diversity for the sake of diversity for political reasons. No different to what people do now.
