Race swapping isn't new. They've been replacing white characters with black/asian/whatever since forever. So many characters, you probably didn't even know, like Morgan Freeman in Shawshank was Irish in the Stephen King book.
No one really made a big deal about this back then, because they the media didn't make a big deal about it either. They didn't push it as a "good thing", and the people who bitched online (i was online back then and was part of various bookish groups too) either hated or disliked it, but again, who was there to push back against them and tell them they're racist for it? No one. They had every right to their opinion and a lot of people understood why they race swapped it, even if they liked Morgan Freeman playing a white man.
>>211897526yeah, no. The vast majority of people i dealt with online in the 90s were college kids and even older. Late 90s had a large influx of kids, thanks to AOL offering unlimited internet for a flat fee, but views remained mostly same shit.
In fact, since the internet felt so much smaller, i actually got to know more than a few journalist and media types before they became "famous." Like, years and years of talking to them nearly everyday in chat rooms (aol, aim, irc, etc). Most of them have deleted all traces of their "old opinions." Their fansites? No longer on archive.org. Forum posts? You can find my old posts talking to them, but I'm responding to no one. All gone, because they're not allowed to have said anything remotely negative about certain issues/people and are scared of losing their jobs or connections.
Here's a screenshot of a screenshot of some of my logs and snippets of what was said in chats. Note the time too, and the chat at the time actually having a dozen active people.
