Haven't played Expedition 33 yet, but my impression of Avowed from playing 70% of it was that it's insufferably generic. I eventually just decided to quit because the game felt so devoid of novelty and inspiration that I saw no reason to waste my time with it further. It doesn't do anything poorly, but it doesn't do anything interesting either. It's the vidya embodiment of content slop.
>the combat is pretty good
Sure? I mean it's inoffensive gameplay and people generally find gameplay to be inherently engaging. But it's nothing you would play a game for, not compared to the myriad of games out there that focus on making the most bespoke and interesting combat experience possible.
>exploration is good
Same argument except here I would even say that it's needless open-ended despite being very focused on its core narrative and works against its strongest gameplay element, the 'pretty good' combat.
>story/art is good
It's your typical fanfiction fantasy worldbuilding that YA produces mountains of these days. Outside of Kai being a cool bro, I don't think it's compelling or remarkable in any way.
>what doesn't get mentioned
The loot/crafting are generic remnants of the game's MMO origins and don't add anything besides a tedious content grind.

All of these games are phenomenally executed and genuinely revolutionary in their own way. Maybe they're not to literally everyone's taste but they're certainly not THE MOST overrated. If I were to submit a candidate for the MOST overrated game it'd probably be something like TW3 because that game's reception is purely vibes with almost nothing redeemable about its gameplay.
