While the rise of failed normalfags is still the 1# reason why it all feels like a shadow of its former self, I think another crucial point that gets overlooked is that many otaku just don't have a reason to participate in a community like they used to.
Let's not kid ourselves, the average otaku isn't the sort to go out of his way to be social for the sake of it. Back then, you had to be more social and participate in a community to get the necessary resources and latest news about your interests. But nowadays, you can just get all you need without ever showing any presence at all. You have the "luxury" of being able to be a complete ghost, which in turn makes you less engaged and passionate about otaku culture as a whole, since you lack the feeling of belonging and community.
Fansites and doujin works would also thrive more if nuOtaku didn't have a tendency to isolate whenever the opportunity arises and would be more consciously aware of how their refusal to participate disconnects them from their passion.
