I don't think I am.
I think "empathy" as its sold to us by modern society is most commonly based upon emotional response not understanding and more to the point there is generally someone else telling you who you're supposed to be empathizing with and who you're not supposed to be empathizing with.
Consider the current topic of comedy. If I make a joke about a white working class person being poor, or stupid, or poorly educated or uncouth then the zeitgeist tells me that this is a funny joke. On the other hand if I make the same joke about a black working class person being poor or stupid then the zeitgeist tells me that I'm cruel and insensitive. Its the same joke only in one instance the target is approved by society and in the other instance its not.
This isn't empathy, its conformity. These people are told to sympathize with a minority and so they do. While if they are told to hate another minority who stands in opposition to the system say a Russian or an Iranian then suddenly the empathy disappears.
True empathy is objective, its standing up for the rights of the people who oppose you as well as those you deem on your side. Picking sides is just identity politics.
