Not exactly. Athrun was trying to talk no jutsu Shinn the whole time but he failed. Shinn went full schizo and was about kill Luna, only then Ahtrun goes Seed mode and dismembers Destiny in seconds.
Basically Shinn lost the moment Athrun got serious.
Though to be fair, one can argue Shinn wasn't performing at his best due to losing his goddamn mind.
