And it being outside material by the people who make the games as opposed to being in-game matters...because...erm...?
Sonic is a multimedia franchise and I personally do not limit myself to the games when it comes to how I understand the canon. I do limit myself to Sonic Team/SoJ. While the games are, of course, the main part and hopefully will always be the main part, there is other material in this franchise that exists.
Anons will take outside statements as fact if they're on Sonic Channel, the JP Twitter (run by Ed the Shadriachad), or even if it's just some random post by Toyoda. But then, is this suddenly an exception? Why? People cannot be consistent about this topic to save their lives. If the person who made both Shadow and Maria (his OCs, donut steel) is calling the story he wrote "the story of Shadria," it's not "delusional" to say that perhaps maaaybe there's a romantic aspect to their bond.
>Inb4 aishiteru even though it's been explained multiple times that it can be used outside of romance and the context matters heavily
You forgot the blushing. I've certainly never had that reaction to a complement from my brother. But I think I already talked to you about this yesterday. Have you responded to this yet bro? https://pastebin.com/y3rbWLqf

It's both. Shadow is in a kind of a weird area where he's mature, badass, and old enough to trigger a sexual instinct in women, but he's also immature, innocent, and young enough to trigger a maternal instinct in women. So, you end up with a combination of both. For me personally, I fell for him at around 12, and the attraction was the typical "I can fix this bad boy" thing. Then as I got older and reached adulthood, the attraction started shifting heavily into "I want to be his mommy girlfriend." Movie 3 just made it way worse.
