Here's the result. At least it looks pretty intriguing. As you can guess, the giga air bubbles are from ticks being cooked, you can discern the little bastards.

Using multiple layers looks like a good option, if I can get it to work without having multiple strata.
Painting each and every tick individually is, sadly, out of the question: there are hundreds of them, and they're fragile because they're frozen (in the following pics, you can notice a good number of tick legs that broke off and float in the orb).
