Because Catholicism is plagued by idolatry. It isn't the statues or prayers that are themselves idolatrous (at least, as far as strict Biblical condemnation goes), but the fact that they make offerings to statues of creatures. We are explicitly commanded to worship nobody except God, and insofar as worship means the offering of sacrifices, the Catholic Church and its offerings of flowers to Saint Mary, offerings of money to Saint Anthony and offerings of eggs to Saint Clara are a clear violation of that commandment.
