Chapters 1-4 of each uma story serve as a prologue to that uma's career mode, showing how (You) met her and became her trainer. I'd personally recommend reading them before the career, either to see whether a given uma interests you or simply for the extra context they provide.
Chapters 5-7 are bonus slice-of-life bits that are generally standalone from the other chapters and can be read whenever.
