Just continue the story and do side quests. The free roam mode massively expands after Chapter 7 when Hermit and Homura join. I'm absolutely swimming in money now and I haven't sold much at all.

It's a pretty simple action combat game, so shouldn't be anything too bad.
It takes quite a bit into the story for Hermit to actually join the party, just a heads up.
The main story isn't actually that long though, 10-12 hours, even 8 if you're beelining it. The bulk of the game is the open world mode where you're getting all these outfits and stuff.
