Both are extremely iconic and revolutionary in their aesthetics, atmosphere, drama, setting technology, and the incorporation of religious fantasy and the sacred into 20th-century science fiction (in which they share a genre). And both share a lot of motifs, presumably from Gainax taking Star Wars influence, such as Gendo/Shinji paralleling Vader/Luke, or picrel resembling the original 1970s Star Wars poster.
