I would have thrown money as Wizards hand over fist if they were faithful to LotR instead of bastardizing it with Chinese Legolas, Black Rohirrim, Black Aragorn, Black Gandalf and Galadriel, and plenty more. Its a fucking insult. Additionally however, the more time passes, the more I do think the Tolkien Estate is equally if not more to blame. The guard rails came off the minute Christopher Tolkien died for who took over next to sell out and bastardize it.
Plus, quite literally every other Universes beyond magic the gathering set has been faithful to the IP its adapting.
Fallout, Warhammer, and especially Final Fantasy.
I do think Square is especially protective of its IP, but that only further reinforces my point I guess.
Final Fantasy was fantastically and faithfully adapted, which I think is actually part of the reason it shit all over Lord of the Rings in sales too.
