Like they had a choice? Nintendo only bought like... 49% of the company. Even the guys who founded Rare were like "shit, I thought they would have bough us outright". Microsoft then swooped in with a fat $375mil, something that wouldn't have happened if Nintendo didn't twiddle their thumbs and let both Microsoft AND Activision (yeah, they could have been bought by them) enter a bidding war for Rare.
