1. Find the pillar you like, pic related is generally considered optimal area but anything nearby is good too
2. Put your sub-fief at the bottom which is your main base for now until you get your thopter finished, space for all your crafting/vehicles/ect.
3. Put a sub-fief at the top, just to protect it
4. Finish thopter
5. Now ditch the top sub-fief, put in an advanced fief, start applying vertical stakes (they give you the space above, and below, all horizontal fief squares now and into the future including the original fief square).
6. Move everything up
7. Delete bottom fief, extend stake over ground, claim ground, put in garage
Thats how I would do it as a new player. Whenever you can run the labs in the very north and north-west part of the map, sometimes you get entire thopter parts, they're damaged but that doesn't mean anything given that parts like the chassis and cockpit don't take much if any durability damage. Only wings break, engine/psu very slowly break.
