Just because we are the ones who choose, doesn't mean it's our SOUL. Just because we can control Kris and choose his dialogue doesn't mean we are him, for example. Being able to choose what happens to a character doesn't mean we're it. In fact, Chara getting the SOUL only allowing them to take over Frisk, but not actually interfering with our control over the game (we can still RESET after soulless pacifist) clearly proves we aren't connected to the SOUL at all.
