Am I the only one worried about where the story is heading for us as players? It feels like both routes are setting us up for no happy ending. At best, a bittersweet conclusion in the normal route, and a terrible one in the strange route.

In the normal route, everything points to us fulfilling the prophecy in our own way, saving the world, and making the game’s characters happy, but we’ll be forced to cease existing and leave this world forever, with our existence forgotten.

In the strange route, we become an outright villain, but this makes the characters stronger—strong enough to defeat us and save the world on their own, without our help. They gain freedom from us. But we still cease to exist, though our villainy won’t be forgotten.

I’m afraid that, as players, we’re nothing more than a pitiful tool in this story. The whole moral of the narrative design seems to be about making the player realize they’re a player in a game and start respecting the characters, rather than treating them like puppets.

The endings for the player in DR will strongly resemble Aoen’s endings in Pathfinder WOTR. Everyone gets a happy ending except our in-game avatar. If you like those kinds of endings, you’ll probably enjoy it. But personally, I’m not a fan, and I’m worried I’ll end up deeply disappointed.

So chapter 3 confirms that Queen was originally the creation of Kris and Dess playing, right? And other Darkners in chapter 3 talk about memories of when Kris and others would play with them. But in chapters 1 and 2 Darkners act like they've existed independent of Lightners for forever and even Queen doesn't acknowledge any history with Kris besides looking up his search history. We also know from Chapter 4 that Dark Worlds aren't a single, solid place and are affected by the person who created them. I think Rudy is the Knight and the Dark Worlds he creates are based on memories of stories Dess told him about her playing. This is why no Darkners beside the Chapter 3 ones, which were made by Kris, have any real memories of the past, they're all secondhand copies. Does this make sense? Am I just retarded?

In chapter 2, pop ups, viruses, antiviruses, and mp3s probably don't have much interaction with lighteners aside from the occasional mouse click. The exception is Queen, who kind of knows, but is also batshit crazy and narcissistic.
In 3, a lot of darkeners know Kris, because they were around him a lot more.
In 4, most of them don't know Kris because he spends most of the time in church asleep and one of them was dead the whole time.

I'd say the darkeners remember those with serious connections, not just passing interactions, with some sentience that is required of knowing about the dark world they inhabit coming as a normal addition.

What you don't get is that Noelle is such a freak, such a profound one, she fully enjoyed Snowgrave. The Mantle itself basically spells it out, both Kris and Noelle deep down enjoyed it, and there's no excusing the trance on anything, she was lucid. As we went along, they very much stopped caring and started enjoying it, and even the scene itself ends up basically being a reversal of what she was doing, aka her pushing herself towards us shamelessly.

TBDesu, I like that ch3 and 4 both break from the expected chapter structure and has more "progressing pass this point means you can't go back", it means Toby can get more creative with map design and have the story go in more unexpected directions.

With the way the sword route is structured and integrated into ch3, I can't think of many ways to change it without making it feel weaker overall.
What it needs is more obvious hints that the secret boss is related to the S rank room and that you're supposed to go there after each round and before the boss fight.

Also there should've been a way to farm points after the first round because how the fuck are you supposed to know that you need to have 1.5k saved up to buy S rank.
