makes sense in a 2D game, otherwise you could just get around enemies without issue, contact damage means you either fight the enemies and engage with the game from a combat level, or dodge/jump enemies without touching them, engaging with the game from traversal/platforming level
i think it works for the vast majority of 2D sidescrolling games
