It's of a grey area in the game I wanna say, but there are still some glimpses of the trainer treating the girls differently depending on the girl, and in the anime they make it plain clear that it isn't a self-insert and some of the trainers are even based off their irl counterparts to some degree, either in reference to their name or personality (i.e ntr's trainer), which I think is neat honestly, more representation in the honse racing community.
