If one stat is too low, I'll prioritize that as long as I can level someone's friendship from it
I'll do rainbows if there's more than 2 and it wouldn't interfere too much with the previous step
Just keep playing and eventually you'll get a feel for where stats should be while progressing. I'm finally at a point where I don't have to use clocks at all. Haven't even had to use the freebie in a while.

depends on why you've brought that card, if you brought it specifically for the skills it provides, then yes you might consider taking a training spot with that hint over a training spot with 1 (or even 2) more umas in need of friendship on it
but generally if you're just boosting stats with your cards then prioritise friendship; but what's important to remember is that hints ALSO give you +5 friendship, so you might factor that in if you have a hint on an uma that's way behind on friendship
