Broly started the trend of anime characters with trauma. I guess you can count Tetsuo from Akira but it was often assumed the characters powers would kill them. Sasuke's problem is that he didn't start as the elite like Vegeta who's foundation got shattered or Future Gohan who threw himself into the meat grinder. Sasuke had a three man team for support, abandoned them for Orochimaru, then abandoned snakeman for the Akatsuki, betraying those for the Leaf. If he was written as ambitious it wouldn't be a problem but he needs his brother to tell him to avenge him making me wonder why he didn't go the Gungrave route.
