It's legitimately great for video games, even as is, but by nature needs to be designed for and so until it's miniaturized to the point that owning and using one is completely trivial, it will remain at the current level of popularity it's at (a supported niche).
Some genres are genuinely just objectively better in VR. Racing games are the best example. Playing a racing game in VR gives you a VASTLY better and more immediate sense of positioning and speed, which makes your reactions and control better, which makes you objectively better at the game.
