Helldivers are recruited and then cloned, to keep the clone gene pool from stagnating.
Cloning them is easier than training more individual helldivers. The tutorial implies they’re poorly trained but even the basic starting cadet has amazing stamina, knows how to operate and reload any (non alien) weapon they come across.
My take is that once you’re recruited, super earth samples your DNA, then the cryo pods in the super destroyer store your backup clones. An entire battleship under the command of a single diver who can die anytime makes no sense.
More people are recruited to provide super earth with more clone templates, each super destroyer is essentially carrying a different breed of helldiver clone.
Tl;dr helldivers are clones with unique flavours.
