Stadium is obviously the endgame for Team 4. It's what they think the future of Overwatch is. They already sent out feelers to esports guys about making it the base mode. OW esports is deader than dead though, so their opinions really don't matter.
While I'm really enjoying Stadium, and am having a hard time playing base modes much at all, I do fear what it's going to be like once the rest of the roster is included. That's an insane volume of work, both in terms of actually getting them into Stadium and balancing everyone once they're in. They're going to have to pull resources from base mode maps and hero design to finish it and maintain it.
that being said...
I don't actually think putting time into the base modes is worthwhile anymore. They've been the exact same thing for a decade, 5v5 is a failed attempt at revamping base Overwatch, and there's been multiple major rule changes like role queue, perks, and hero limits that haven't done anything to actually help the game's popularity and success. Stadium could potentially give them access to a different market of players who are more interested in the hero part of HERO shooters.
Blizzard is playing for a younger market now. Overwatch as an IP has been burned in the eyes of adult buyers. There's absolutely no chance that they manage to stir a mass return or exodus into Overwatch. It's just not going to happen. They have to start young and get people excited for something different ASAP, that's what Stadium is.
I originally was a huge Stadium doubter. I thought it seemed like they wasted time on another project no one asked for, just like PvE, but we're 1.25 seasons into its existence and it's all I play now.
