Man Sam really almost had it. The above-it-all independence. Become that aloof, mysterious cool artist guy. Funny, with people caring about what you think. Teflon man.
But then you see the Marky thing lurking in the shadows. The more you stare at it the more the illusion of the guy he wants people to see him as fades. Sam knows this, it's why he censors all mention of her and wishes beyond everything else that the whole thing would become memory holed forever. Like a festering, infected wound that won't heal, covered in layers and layers bandages, the more you peel back the more disgusting it gets as you see what a vile person Sam is.
