>If you don't want "the love interest" or "the sidekick" in your Sonic AU series thing, THEN WHY EVEN TRY TO INCLUDE THE LOVE INTEREST OR SIDEKICK CHARACTERS AT ALL!?? And, why in the WORLD would you even consider merging them together?!??! That's crazy!!! That's like trying to, like... make a Flash series with Barry Allen, but you merge Iris West and Wally West into a single character, and prevent Barry from marrying Iris or letting Wally become Kid Flash and the next Flash after Barry. The entire creative decision in and of itself is nonsensical no matter how you slice it.
Because Amy Tails is not supposed to be "the love interest". She is "the side kick" in so far as being a supporting character who complements Sonic's skills, carries Sonic around like Tails in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, works as the mechanic and vehicle enthusiast who ensures Sonic can traverse the planet, and reports and record his adventures. Amy Tails also has Amy Rose's empathetic heart and helps Sonic empathize with those he encounters on his journey. Assisting him in finding common ground where possible.

Because of the fact that they have several notable traits of the original Amy and Tails, if not their exact role. Their design also pays homage and reference to both Amy Rose and Miles Prower. The point is that the audience will see this character, a two-tailed fox wielding a piko piko hammer, and instantly register 'This is a fusion of Amy Rose and Tails the Fox, so they're probably a mechanic, can fly with two tails, and can pack a punch with a hammer.' Having an OC for this AU would undermine this since the design would not be immediately recognizable nor have instant appeal to general audiences and observers.
