Nu-metal's not really metal in the traditional sense in the fact that nu-metal largely grew out of rap rock and grunge/post-grunge rather than metal itself, and it was merely considered metal for the reason that it generally employed heavily distorted guitars and riffs. Yeah, you can make some connections to groove metal but the groove metal link is tenuous at most. Nu-metal largely didn't employ the same structures you saw in nearly every metal genre prior. Riffs weren't harmonically complex and were instead built around drum patterns and vocals. Nu-metal was structured around hiphop rhythms and trends in 90s post-hardcore and alternative rock rather than a direct evolution of what metal was doing (like how every other metal genre is a direct evolution of something else within metal).
