I play both. Even today no roguelike has made me feel that the progression was correct for the place I "should" be at. Most of them unlock stuff too slowly or you unlock the important stuff fast and the rest of it is lame and gay.

Unlocking new stuff can be gay in its own way too, forcing you to deal with boring shit before the good parts.
