The process for me was: ring up council and submit a homeless application, council verify I am homeless, council refer my details to a hostel (can be miles away, was very far away for me), got the train to the hostel same day and arrived in the middle of the night, got sorted in my room, lived in that hostel for 4 weeks paying them £313 per week while the council tried to find a flat for me. Then after 4 weeks I got a call one day out the blue and was told details of the flat they'd found for me, had to pick up the keys and go there same day with my bags.
The cost was because I told them I had savings. Had I not disclosed to them the savings I had from my previous job, I wouldn't have paid anything; it would all have been paid by Housing Benefit. Everyone else their was there for free. So yeah my advice to anyone ITT who finds themselves homeless is fuck being honest with them and just say you have no money.

Yeah I paid £1200/month for that room. As I say, the place was full of junkies and alcoholics. The sort of people you'd expect in a homeless hostel. Sounds grim and in some aspects it was however in retrospect it was also decent craic, an adventure of sorts.
