You are falling for the downplaying this incident received from online shills, the russians pretended that they didn't know who the force was because they thought they would have succeeded and you know very well that they would have loved to get their hands on some american POWs, they din't expect the whooping they got at all, they used the standard mech assault tactics that were still being used until recently (before the scooters), they just didn't use air support because they knew they couldn't deal with the F22s in the area providing CAP and losing jets would make it impossible to keep plausible deniability, which is the point Wagner was even thing, it was not about "liking" them or not, that's the cope excuse, the implication is that they could've brought the full might of their forces and won, they would if they could.

You mean the Kremlim thought, they received calls from the US command and pretended that they didn't know that Wagner force because they thought that the call meant that the US forces were really caught undefended and would be easily destroyed/captured, if it were a genuine mistake or miscalculation they'd call them off and no one would ever hear about the incident.
Also the cope about muh air support, they did have jets in the area, but they did not dare support their own forces because of F-22s around, this was as real a battle as you can get and they lost 1000%.
