Does that really sound so insane?
Even during the Fates days, you had people complaining that Fire Emblem had become "dating sim weebshit" and pined for the days of GBA/GC Fire Emblem when the franchise was totally dark and serious.
So I can understand why they'd think that the more gritty and colorless FE game they had under production wouldn't do as well as the bright and colorful one with writing being a secondary focus like Fates would do much better.
The mistake was making that game meant to appeal to a wider audience an anniversary game where you'd need to have played each previous FE title to know who the fuck these characters are.
