Unfortunately it is because what's going on with Square Enix, ffxiv isn't removed from. When the rest of the company suffers they will look at what is profitable and making a return to fill the gaps and those two departments at SE are the merch and MMO divisions. In plain English, there is going to be immense belt tightening for reinvestment into FFXIV for the forseeable future.

That ship has sailed, it's reputation was damaged the moment YoshiP didn't address the criticisms of Dawntrail but instead doubled down on them by saying retarded things like he thought 7.0s problems were that they weren't able to depict Wuk Lamat enough which is an insane statement after the release of the amount of lines and words attributed to her.
What that tells people is that the guy who is responsible for the game is out of touch and that is reputationally damaging even before you reach the complaints about the graphics update for the console rpers, or the stale gameplay, or the MSQ complaints, or the lack of action against Playerscope for almost a year.
