No, it's more about instant gratification. MMORPGs are basically long as journey of getting to the end game where the fun supposedly begins. Why would a person today bother with that shit? They don't care about the community, other players are only tolerate when they need them for dungeons or PvP, and they look up guides for all content.

Everquest is a dead game but it doesn't hide it. It's a ghost town, if you bumble around in everquest or GW1 it's largely going to be just you.
Modern MMO's try to hide this by obscuring the numbers or playercount, or in GW2's case making megaservers. That can only go so far to making a dead game appear lively because you are going to have a hard time doing the OG content on GW1, there simply aren't people to queue with.

I think there's only a very small portion of gamers who are like this and Ideally that's who you want to attract if you are getting an MMO. I'm not a loyalist personally. I played Runescape originally, jumped over to Ultima Online, then WoW, then GW2, then Archeage, then FFXIV, currently not playing any MMO's because if the game is not fun, why bother?
Among those MMO's I listed, the only one I would consider not "dead" is FFXIV, but only because there's a daily incentive for veterans to play legacy content so you're not going to have trouble queuing as a new player.

imo this is actually one of XIV's greatest strengths, especially with the game not being afraid at all to tell you to go fuck yourself, you're in for a VERY long and story-driven game, you have to pay extra if you want to skip to muh endgame and you still can't actually do that, just to the start of the most recent expansion's story

It's what makes it a live game, it can still attract new players and keep them because of this strategy. Every other MMO is mostly just the diehards who have kept on for 20 years.
In GW2 for example, good luck finding anyone who is doing OG dungeons. You can ask and people will generally be pretty welcoming to new players, but you are going to have to do work to find a group to do legacy content which could take an hour or more to make yourself. They aren't going to get anything for doing it either, it's totally dependent on the charity of the veteran player.
Compare this to FFXIV where a queue might be 5-15 minutes for early game content.

It's the least worst of all the horrible mtx in the MMO's I've played. My major problem with FFXIV is the time gating mechanics on the currency needed to get new gear. Makes it so I can't nolife it for a month and fuck off, have to stay subbed because it's artificially gating me out of new content.
Archeage was the worst but it's fuckin dead. Private servers do it better.
GW2 is pretty fucking awful, as a Vet player I have access to shit you're going to have to pay for to compete with me. I have all the bank tabs and the maximum bag space and infinite resource gathering tools. the class design issue is a problem. All tanks play almost IDENTICAL to one another. Everything follows a strict 1 minute or 2 minute rotation. They reworked Paladin a couple years back because it was 'too confusing' for players to understand. What the fuck? Also, Dark Knight used to be this awesome class with a really unique kit that played differently to the other tanks. They purged all of that and just made it a worse Warrior. Class homogenization is a problem and it needs to be looked at moving forward.

this tbqh. I had the most fun I've ever had with an MMO playing pre-bb Maplestory in 2005/2006. It was so much effort to grind out levels post-40 that actually seeing someone with a 3rd job level (70+) was like seeing a unicorn, and the guys on the server over 100 were basically mini-celebrities with crowds of people following them around whenever they popped into a main city. Unfortunately that era of MMOs is long since dead and buried, and I don't think it'll be coming back anytime soon.

Nearly everything I tried with a PvP focus is trying to be a MOBA-lite with instanced PvPs and teams and shit where PvP feels more like a minigame or an e-sport. I don't like that.

I just want something that feels like playing WoW on a PvP server back in the day whenever a new expac would launch, but I'm sick of WoW and want to play something entirely different that will surprise me.

It genuinely almost did. The writer for season 4 of living world said they were asked to write the ending as a potential off-ramp if needed. I've actually been playing the game recently after not playing since launch and ive been surprisingly really enjoying myself now. I'm glad they didn't drop the game because while its winding down it feels like ANET found a formula that really works. It makes me interested for a potential GW3 (hopefully they do another Hall of Momuments like they did for GW1 to GW2). I think if Anet just takes the exploration and zone design of the earlier expacs but pair that with a deeper level of character customization like you had in GW1 that came could really hit, especially if it comes out within the next 3 years. There's like no new MMOs from anyone that could be considered a trusted developer on the horizon so if GW3 is announced soon Anet would have the spotlight all to themselves.

Story still ass from what ive done so far (just started Heart of Thorns) but I don't mind when ive been finding the actual gameplay to be engaging.

The whole schtick about MMOs initially was that they were supposed to be "living" worlds, then WoW came along and said that actually MMOs are theme parks. Today the former is less appealing to the majority of people because most people want to play games, not live in virtual worlds, but the thing about theme parks is that if you don't regularly have new shit people will get bored and leave. Any theme park MMO that needs more than 3 months before a major update comes is a continuous failure that will slowly bleed players.

GW2 tried that with it's very first run of updates: destroying the main player hub, the election, multiple instances and world bosses with unique loot and everyone complained and lots of people left because they missed stuff that was only playable once. The difference is that base MSQ was also shit so the follow up patches have to reverse that sentiment. EW patches were shit from the moment we met Zero but had the goodwill from base EW that people took it as inoffensive at the time. ShB 5.3 MSQ was phenomenal and followed a very strong base MSQ alongside the weapon series having it's own great story which makes the rest of the patches inoffensive.

7.x patches have zero goodwill from Dawntrail because that MSQ was bad and all the leadup patches to it were not exciting at all. I agree that 7.2 and 7.3 were good but they weren't the level of 5.3 or even 4.3 imo. They are still struggling to make anyone give a shit about the Solution 9ers.

The bad part of borrowed power was that it was a boring ass grind for no reason and they just replaced that with gear upgrades and the vault (requires 8 M+ a week to stay caught up) which take up even more fucking time. The gear upgrade system makes it so you can just replace your entire equipment set that you just spent 6 months grinding in a single week (besides maybe like 2 tier pieces and a trinket). One other thing about XIV is it tends to give context to why people do evil shit.
