I wouldn't be surprised. I don't think FRIEND is going to play its hand until the endgame. The imagery of the SOUL being stuck in a birdcage while we're stuck on the main plot, and FRIEND being a cat trying to trick us into escaping that plot and thus leaving the birdcage, feels too on the nose to be anything but ominous. It's trying to lure us into the darkness by having us break the plot.
