The slavic world without Russia?
Poland is a great country to use to examine this hypothetical. Poland was completely avoided by the Black death because of its lack of development and importance. This combined with a European view that the east was ideal territory to rob meant that Poland was not even labelled on some maps. While this speaks to the esteem mighty Poland was held in, in the middle ages it does not take into account perhaps the greatest feat of Polish strength and state craft. This feat starts with being so developmentally backward it was completely wiped off the map in the late 1700s only to be recreated as an attempt to maintain peace by creating a buffer zone between Germany and Russia over 100 years later. The feat then continues with once more being wiped off the map in the early 1900s only to finish by graciously being allowed to exist once more and even be modernized out of the goodness of Russia's heart.
While the above only makes mention of Poland's military, political, and economic acumen Poland as a case study is still worth further examination. Specifically it would be illuminating to examine what Poland's rich cultural achievements would be without its heavy Russian influence. Yet in the interest of the character count and my boredom I will end it there.
