It entirely depends on how deep/open the character creation system is, if there are decent looking characters with lots of options and the character doesn't have much of a backstory then I'll play female and create my OC donut steel waifu that I created when I was young and have been writing about and drawing for most my life

If there's some sort of hard set backstory or limited customization options I either try to make a lore friendly character or just make a generic self insert guy

If its a game with some sort of customizable companion/party system then I create myself for the main character and my waifu as the follower
