Why did we move to wayland when most features aren't supported yet?

What's the difference between
-vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD128
and
-hwaccel vaapi -hwaccel_device /dev/dri/renderD128 -hwaccel_output_format vaapi

Should I install hdparm on arch to handle HDD spindown when it's not being accessed or this would negatively affect the lifespan of the hard drives?
