I hate it either way, but I will at least give XBC2 some props for explicitly using it as a sense of progression.
>Early game, Rex can't handle the Aegis's power at all, frequently loses in the cutscene
>Mid game, he's getting far better, holding his own, but still sometimes outmatched and loses in the cutscenes
>Late game, he's a Master Driver and the final boss is running from him, to try scramble for a new power up to even try fight evenly. Every cutscene he's winning hard
Feels consistent with his character and the story, and it feels earned.
