So why didn't Tom just knock out Gane after the eyepoke like Waldo?

Would Tom have lost this much respect if he would've just been heemed by Gane?
I feel like between the Helwani and some of the media boohooing for him on top of his dad's response video about Tom still being "blind" is makes it hard not to roll your eyes at.
