There have always been bad (and even horrible) models. But it was the exception back then, and now the awesome models became the exception.

At the same time, Atlan Forge is one of the worst offenders when it comes to overdetailing, but they are also an exception, and not all STL files look like this. You can find tons of stuff that is totally in line with GWs amount of details.
