>Nemleian tales are all about characters fulfilling ideals, even in the mist of tragedies and sadness
Nonsense, SnS is the perfect embodiment of what Wilde was talking about. All Andrew has ever wanted was to get over his Nina guilt, escape prosecution, and have Ashley all to himself. For 22 years he suffered the tragedy of not getting it. Then, at the end, his greatest tragedy suffered was getting it. He has everything he wants, but none of it is right. He escapes his guilt (of all things) by becoming a drunk, he escapes the law by living in a slum, and has the wrong Ashley.
It's Wildean, Kafkaesque, Shakespearean cinema, etc.
