It's fine for the most part, I think Pokemon Trainer is an absolute triumph of translating Pokemon's mechanics to a fighting game and I don't really have too much of an issue with moooosst of the choices. Incin is definitely a step down but let's not act like Lucario and Greninja weren't put in for the exact same "TCPI wants to sell you this Pokemon" reasons, the only difference is people didn't warm up to Incin.
When it comes to the movesets I also think they're good for everyone except Jigglypuff, who desperately needs her kit to be reworked after being dogshit since Melee (and being broken in Melee) and Lucario, who's aura gimmick is completely made up and actively detrimental to it to the point where them lessening aura's effectiveness and making Lucario more consistent at lower percents was considered enough of a buff to momentarily get people to play the character again.
For the next Smash, I'd really rather get some popular legacy Pokemon over [newest starter from next generation] though truthfully it'd be hard to pinpoint exactly one that hasn't been shilled to death at this point.

>It's especially bad because launch ultimate only got 6 new characters.
Disingenuous, some veterans were reworked to the point where they're basically newcomers, *especially* Ivysaur and Squirtle, who play next to nothing like their Brawl counterparts, Ivysaur especially was the single worst character in Brawl but was the strongest part of Pokemon Trainer before she got nerfed.

We really don't.

Skipped because of missing the Smash release timing, same reason there's nothing from Gen 3 (unless you count PT since its the FRLG design).
