I don't think it's that he wasn't sure people would get it. I think it's more that if the analogy is so blatant to begin with why be subtle about it at all? Instead of thinly veiled Christian imagery, he just dropped the veil entirely. I found it refreshingly honest, I'm just not sure the subject matter can carry the theological weight this sort of thing requires. The failure is not in the aesthetic itself, but that the aesthetic is being used to elevate pulp into something spiritually and it's a fundamentally flawed intent. Superman just isn't that serious of a thing.
I would be kinda curious to see Snyder do just a straight up Christian film. Like, if he made The Last Temptation I think it would really be something.
