Also - people are still living around Pripyat just fine. Wildlife is blooming around there. Radiation is mostly ok-level except very close to the elephant's foot, and even there it's just the direct radiation that fucks you up.
Goes the same with the liquidators - the ones who died were directly irradiated by the nucleus debris. Everyone else was just fine, INCLUDING the people operating the plant WHILE THE NUCLEUS MELT DOWN.
They sent people in to release a valve near the nucleus, supposedly a suicide mission. The three people were completely fine, 2 are still alive, one died of natural causes at 82.
The alpha radiation fallout fairy tale is just that - a fairy tale.
