Everyone references the prison scene as a standout moment and for good reason. It's because it's the one time in the game where I felt any kind of rawness from Noah. On the first pass, Mio seems to have accepted her fate and she just wants to comfort Noah in their last days but the scene still works she'd you understand you're seeing M there. Saying what she wishes she could say to N before she can fuck off out of this shitty cycle.
But the prison scene is in the extreme minority. I understand what XC3 wanted to do. But it's really fucking weird for these characters to set up battle plans and beat down their own kinsman in the name of some higher truth. Yes, they understand that the war is fake, that doesn't mean they can just dumpster their personal feelings about their countrymen right? Taion's biggest motivation is that he fucked up once and it got his fellow Agnians and his mentor killed. His hatred against the Kevesi grew that day. So to see Taion hanging out at Colony 4 signing on for a battle plan with Zeon against his Agnian brothers? Is it me? Am I the one who doesn't get why this isn't a really fucking weird angle to put your story. Especially when you're bringing these Colonies together just to kill them at the end? This shit literally does not matter.
