I think cancel culture or woke culture, whatever you want to call it, does play a part for sure. The fear of being lumped into the bad side. And part of that is again to benefit simple-minded thinking. This person thinks this, or did this, and i therefor evil. If you think otherwise, you're as bad as them.
I do think when it comes to age, there does have to be a minimum, so it's understandable why age of consent is set. Is it more difficult than just stating an age to determine when a person is the right age to consent to sex? Absolutely. But you have to set some sort of hard limit in order for it to not be up for interpretation. You can't say "around the 12 to 16 range" and then be shocked and outraged when a large group of middle schoolers are impregnated by men with names they don't remember.
The question at that point is, if hard-set age of consent laws are too strict and unforgiving, then what is the alternative? I think just about every man alive, if able to make an opinion without persecution, would agree that a criminal sentence for a man who fucks a 17 year old is a bit ridiculous. But if you start letting things slide, people WILL push boundaries.
