Barely. It hyperfixated on the veteran stuff that was only mentioned in passing and which had very little to do with the feeling of being burdensome, depressed, unwanted, withdrawn, etc. Which is ultimately what makes one feel completely in-human.
It also lacked message that once the main character turns into a monster, everyone else becomes monstrous to him. For a while his sister resisted, but eventually she was the one who insisted the most that her brother should be dead or gone.
And whether we all learn to be this cruel, or if it's just in our nature; To be carelessly cruel to anyone we treat as an untouchable, a leper, an outcast, vermin, or just an animal. Whether we even recognize that we are doing it, or if we accept it as normal that some people - or 'unpeople', since we do not treat them as people - suffer, and that there’s nothing we can do, even when there clearly is much we can do.
