Burnout, being an autist that couldn't handle the Japanese business structure, missing the deadline as a result of both, clearly not knowing how to structure game development or plan. Evident by programmers leaving as soon as they joined, him adding new mechanics mid-development like types, deciding to add 200 Pokemon off the bat when they got bigger cartridges, clearly only actually being an idea guy gamer and not so much of a creative lead

All this happened before the games were even localized in English btw

That would have required this man to not burn out and shut down entirely and give up his magnum opus to Masuda to try and haphazardly slap together a sequel that was just more of the same and then be encouraged to do the same for Gen III-onward. If the daddy of the franchise wasn't such a fucking failure despite being mentored by Shigeru Miyamoto of all people, sure, Pokemon could have been "awesome"

But no, people bought Masuda's slop anyways. Masuda's slop kept the franchise "alive" and people should have dropped out by Gen III but that didn't happen. Then when Gen VI came around all the kids who were embarrassed to enjoy Pokemon grew up and sent the franchise to its grave

Honestly the crazy part about the Gen II hate brigade was Kanto was going to be even worse if we stuck with Tajiri's vision

>Gigantic ass city with one Gym that's supremely cumbersome to move around in and is completely pointless to explore because the gimmick of being the game's last region as a town meant there wasn't going to be many worthwhile secrets in the area

Masuda's still a hack, especially for how he chose to handle RS onwards, but Kanto feels a lot more magical as a small backyard to the whole new world you live in versus whatever the fuck that was going to be
