You don't leave your house too much except for work. You keep the blinds drawn down and triple-check you've locked the door when you have to leave. You don't walk places with your guard down after school is out, and doubly-so after dark. You don't keep more than $10 cash on you ever, if you have any at all. You see somebody get carjacked at gunpoint fifty feet ahead of you in broad daylight a couple times a year. Gunshots are a regular fixture of the night-time ambience if you have a window open, distinctly different from fireworks and too common to assume it's just a car back-firing. I just love the hustle and bustle of the big city!
